A group of European researches created an undercover penguin robot spy to interact with real-life penguins in Antarctica. Previous versions of the robot penguin failed because the device was made of silicon and other synthetic materials. This new version, however, mirrors the fur, shape, and appearance of actual penguins. The life-like figure has been successful in recent tests, and captures video and data more efficiently than other technology. Before learning more about the research, see the adorable spy camera for yourself:
What makes this research so special is the interaction with real penguins. Most on-the-ground research camera and rovers can record creatures from a distance, but this robot penguin aims to capture footage of the animals actually interacting with it, and treating it like it’s one of their own. According to lead author, Yvon Le Maho, of the University of Strasbourg, the real penguins attempted to communicate with the camera. He said, “They were very disappointed when there was no answer. Next time we will have a rover playing songs.”
